Canva

Have you heard of Canva? Have you tried it? This is one of my favorite resources on my phone. This website and app provides a great amount of choices to help you create graphics for social media posts and now you can create graphics for invitations, bookmarks and calendars. It is super easy to use and save to Dropbox or your photos. The quality of graphics from Canva is not only top notch but it is a true time saver. I prefer using the app on my phone rather than on my laptop. Suprisingly, I find it much easier to use. The choices are simplified and better organized. I hope you will give it a try, HERE, the next time you need to create graphics for social media or for a presentation.

Do You Have a Word for the Year?

Have you chosen a word as a focus for the new year? Many people, including myself, get a feeling for a word that represents what we hope to receive or share throughout the year. I have never had to push myself to find a word. A word will come to my mind and I allow it to brew in my head for a few days or a week. My word for this year is LOVE. As I look at or think of others, I want to feel love. I want to share love. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34.
What is your word for 2019?

Make Time for Friends

One of my realizations as I entered this year was I rarely reached out to friends. I waited for others to organize lunch dates and get togethers. I am not an introvert but I am happy to be at home or go out by myself. I need to get better at building relationships. I need to learn to share my time with others. Last week I asked three ladies to go out to lunch. It was good to hear that everyone could make it. We tried a new restaurant, enjoyed catching up and promised to see each other sooner. That will go into my datebook as a reminder. It is easy for time to pass by quickly.
I have set a goal for myself to reach out to two more people this month to spend time with. Is it strange to make goals to hang out with people? It might be for some people but as this is one of the areas in my life I identified as needing improvement, any way I intentionally work to make this better is all that matters. If I leave my relationships to take care of themselves as I have done in the past, I will not be the best person I can be and how else will I help others who might need an ear, a hug or more. I challenge you to make time to get together with a friend.

How to Get Back on Track

It only takes a day to throw you off your progress. Once you have a good momentum going it is very important to keep it going. Today was that day for me. First, acknowledge you are off your schedule. I took a long nap in the middle of the day and woke up feeling hours behind, because I was. I shook it off and got back to my planner and to do list. The other thing that is helpful for me is to have phrases that speak to me. I am the youngest of four and was often reminded that I could take more initiative (I was lazy) so the words, “I am not lazy” motivates me. The other phrase I picked up from Brendon Burchard’s wife, Denise, is “I want to do a good job”. What are the words that motivate you?

It is up to you to keep yourself motivated and on track. Unless you meet with a team or partner on a daily basis it could be weeks before anyone notices your decline. Keep a detailed day planner with a full “to do” list. Consider trying the planner from Brendon Burchard, High Performance Planner, which includes daily morning and evening questions which can keep you focused with daily reminders to keep you from sliding back. Remember, this is never just about you. Who is counting on you?

Great Book for the New Year

I want to tell you about a great book that was introduced to me on Sunday but, first I am going to talk about my current path. My New Year journey has been amazing. Each day I learn more about myself, I become more consistent, more determined and fascinated with the information and resources placed in my path. When I start to feel disorganized and a bit overwhelmed, I grab my High Performance Planner by Brendon Burchard and I review my day and my checklists. His template does not include checklists but I have created my own system at the bottom of each page. I am learning to appreciate all of the questions but I am still struggling with one that asks what bold action could I take today. I am not a BOLD person. I can be loud and a bit too sarcastic but not BOLD. My clothes, my hair, my house and my lifestyle are not BOLD. I like the challenge of being BOLD and I look forward to growing into the ability to be BOLD without fear.

Now back to Sunday and the book. I have not been to church in a while. I found a small church I liked. I volunteered in a group. Unfortunately, there were several times I could not attend because of military or family obligations. Once this happened, I started to fall out of the practice of going to church. Towards the end of December, I kicked a cold I had for several weeks and decided it was time to get back to the gym. I got back into a routine, the New Year came around and I was reminded that in order to truly grow I needed to get back to church. I love Gateway Church in Southlake, TX. I love all the people, the energy, the multitude of people greeting, the loud “hold your hands high” music and the support they provide. I left Sunday feeling uplifted and a new book by the lead pastor Robert Morris, “Beyond Blessed”. Honestly, I bought it because they were offering it for $10. I am a sucker for books and I figured I could put it on my bookshelf and get to it when I had time. Reading and the bible are part of my daily checklist. Robert Morris always backs up his writing with biblical references. I figured I would give it a try and fulfill two tasks at once.

I was hooked in the first chapter. It may help that I am a big fan of the way Robert Morris preaches. I can hear his voice when I read his words. I am grateful for this book. I read the previous book, “Blessed Life” and it was very good but the stories felt not familiar enough for me. This book was made for me. I sat in church listening to James Robison speak. He yells to much for me, which is a quick way to shut down my attention, but I was certain he would have something important to say so I did my best to listen. What rang loud and clear was, I am holding on to my life and my plans too tight. Mr. Robison explained how he GAVE his life to the Lord. I was amazed and certain that I have never done that and could not say with certainty that I would ever do that UNTIL…. I read this book. If you are searching for answers about serving the Lord, tithing, being a child of God…all of it…please read this book. I am only on Chapter Four because I am taking so many notes and writing in the book. Yes, I am the person who highlights and underlines text in books. I just can’t get enough of this book and I wanted you to know. It is helping me to walk an even more amazing path in 2019. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.

Do you have a great book from 2018 or this year? Please share. I love everything books.

Expanding Experiences-A Trip to the Museum for Balenciaga

I often find myself sticking close to home. I talk myself out of trips. Thanks to my husband who pushed me to go, we had a wonderful evening. I had suggested we visit the Kimball Museum showing an exhibit on the designer Balenciaga called Balenciaga in Black. It was a warm and beautiful night to be out. The museum was not packed and we were able to spend time looking at each garment and sketches while also fitting in time to admire the detailed prints from Goya.

The night taught me the importance of expanding and changing my normal routine. If you need to do the same, be sure to include a friend or family member who will keep you from backing out and encourage you to try new things.
Below are some of the sketches and dresses from the exhibit. The lighting was not conducive for taking pictures from my phone, or my height put me right in line for the glare.

New Year, New Goals and Resources

Why way is correct?

A New Year has crept up on many of us. An opportunity to create new goals, dreams. There are a multitude of resources to tell us how to create goals and others to tell us we are doing it wrong. It can be challenging enough to focus on the “right” goals and set them up in the “right” way and then to find out you’re doing it wrong. Hence the reason so many people give up on New Years goals. I like a little inspiration along with a little bit of structure. I am a sucker for a handout.

My first favorite resource this year for being both inspirational and thought provoking questions is Lara Casey with Cultivate What Matters. Her website and products are fun, colorful and she injects enough of her personal life to make it even more interesting.
I have not bought her “Power Sheets” because it is a little too colorful and sticker like for me but I LOVE the lists of goal setting questions she has created. If you don’t have time to read the long posts she has kindly included an audio transcript.

My second, but really my most favorite resource this year is Brendon Burchard, #TransformationWeek, on his new website High Performance Life (#hpxlife). He has joined with his wife on this new adventure. In the past, they worked on separate business projects. They just moved to Puerto Rico from the Northwest and who could blame them. What I like is that each day has a video and a downloadable worksheet. Jump on as soon as you can so you can view Day 1 which contains a ton of information and a very detailed questionnaire which is so long that it is taking me days to consume and fill in.

I love Brendon for his knowledge, his energy and his books. My favorite book is Life’s Golden Ticket which is a story with a great lesson. I also like High Performance Habits. The Motivation Manifesto is good but, another one of his works that I have had to digest in small amounts. This year, he published a planner which I am enjoying. It has its limitations and I’m not convinced I’ll buy enough to last through the year. The questions each day get to be a bit much but it is probably what I need which is why it bothers me!! Honestly, I have never found one planner that meets all of my needs. One of these days I am going to create my own calendar/journal. If you want to give Brendon’s a try you can find it on Amazon.com, High Performance Planner Link It is currently on sale for $14.99. Each book lasts 2 months and comes in a variety of fun colors.

Did you find any goal setting videos or programs that have helped you? I would love to hear all about it.

This is a MUST

Why talk about musts?
The word itself can be a little off putting.
No one likes a must, unless we are using it on others!
The beauty of talking about musts is that it can
help you in all areas of your life, mind and body.
Each day, there are a multitude of musts that
you accomplish without questioning it.
You brush your teeth
Put on clean clothes
Read your email or text messages
The key to a more powerful life is harnessing
the power of your daily musts and using them
to accomplish other challenges in your life.
What if you are struggling with drinking enough
water each day.
Before you brush your teeth, which you must,
you drink one glass of water and THEN you are
allowed to brush your teeth.
Silly?………Maybe
Effective…….Absolutely
What if you are avoiding making an appointment
for a medical test (mammogram/colonoscopy) or
you are avoiding making an important phone call
for your job or future career.
Try This…
Before you can go to lunch or before you can leave
the office at the end of the day, you tell yourself
you MUST make the important phone call.
Once you accomplish the task you have been avoiding,
you will wonder why it took you so long.
The outcome is usually more positive than you anticipate.

The Advantage of Numbers

I’ve been thinking a lot about numbers lately.
Numbers are important in our daily life.
The price of goods.
The time it takes to accomplish tasks.
Age.
Blood pressure.
The amount of money saved.
The time frame set on goals.
What numbers do you focus on?
Do you use them to make your life better?
Take a few moments to think of numbers that can help you.
This week I am tracking my productivity.
Daily and weekly review will allow me to
see where I am progressing and where
I can improve.
